News Production : Introducing the chosen story

For our news report we have chosen a fun story based around a local family event. The event in question is the weekend long Red Nose Day event due to happen in Emsworth. The town plans to paint the town red to become the first ever Red Nose Day town by creating a schedule of comedic themed events such as stand up gigs, competition and a large silent disco in the town square they plan to raise as much money they can for the charity whilst having the most fun as possible. They have also tried to gather a little community spirit by getting as many local businesses involved as possible. We have chosen this story not only for its locality and possibilities to shoot but also because it is easily tailored to our news shows target audience. The shoot will also be easily changeable as the wide spread day allows us to shoot on multiple days if we wanted and we could easily gain information. To shoot we will do it all on location at Emsworth in the main square the hub of the major events. We hope to gain evidence whilst were there through vox pops and interviews with people that are involved such as the organiser. Whilst doing our shoot will will use many reference these are those:

News Production: Production schedule

To keep an overview of the production of the many elements whilst producing our news clip we have created a production schedule of all the steps taken.

News Production: Draft scripts

We have created a draft script for the main elements of the stories that can be told. This also includes the Vox pop questions.

News Production : Storyboards

To plan the visual elements of our news piece we have created a storyboard this is a basic layout that we can keep to whilst editing our finished footage. This also allows us whilst filming to acquire the screenshots that are needed including filler shots and all script elements. These are our storyboards :

News production: Interview Details

To organise an interview with the organiser of the event we emailed the production company Wemsfest who's leader Mark Ringwood was the main organiser for the Red Nose Day town. We choose this as out main information point as they had arranged everything that was about to happen and all pr at the events.

Correspondance

The emails that we have sent  and received from Mark Ringwood we have documented.

Questions

We have asked two set of questions one with the Vox pop recipients and one for the arranged interview Mark Ringwood. The first set of Questions used were for the Vox pops.

  • How are you feeling about comic relief taking over the town ?
  • What are you most looking forward to ?
  • Are you attending any of the scheduled events ?
  • Have you been involved in the planning or process of the events?
  • What do you think this event has done for the town ?
The second set of questions were for the arranged interview with Mark Ringwood. Here are those set of questions.

  • How did you come up with the idea of painting the town red ?
  • Now the vibes really great here, so how do you think the people of Ensworth are feeling about having the first ever red nose day town?

Arrangements made

The arrangements with Mark Ringwood were made for permission to shoot and possibly achieve a short interview at the events. We arranged at first for an late meeting to be their whilst their prise event the silent disco was taking place this grew more difficult due to the lack of technology on our part and the presence of the BBC at the event meant that we wouldn't have a chance at interviewing any of the main organisers. Instead of carrying out this elaborate plan we instead went down during the set up of this very important event this allowed us to aim the piece towards people about to attend. In the end we organised a brief interview with Ringwood and the time and date that we would have to be on the scene shooting.

Why did you chose to interview this person ?

We chose to interview Mark Ringwood for this story as not only was he the inventor of this whole idea but he was also held the main role of placing the events together. He is the organiser for Wemsfest a local company that arranges large events so extended this to planning this red nose day festival he also drafted in many of his collgues and friends that we also tried talking to but failed due to the buzz of the event organising. He felt to us the best person to interview as he was at the very heart of the event and held the most information about it.

Practise/ workshop session on compiling a story for television news

To start creating our sport we have started by conducting some basic research into the question: Do we rely on mobile phones too much ?

Here are a few of the useful facts that I found regarding the subject matter including the health risks connected to the issues.

93% of adults in the UK own a mobile device in 2014.
16% of adults live in a mobile only home in 2014.
83.1 million uk monthly subscriptions in 2014.
171 advarage number of SMS and MMS sent per month per person in 2013
(http://media.ofcom.org.uk/facts/)

9 out of 10 children own the UK
(http://www.childalert.co.uk/article.php?articles_id=429)

For a sensible source of primary research we have decide on a vox pop. This allows us to show multiple opinions.

The script

( open with shot of people on their phones - establishing shots )

Did you know according to media of com a research study last year showed that more then 92% of adults in the UK own a mobile device. These people on advarage send 171 SMS or MMS message per month. This poses the question do we rely on our mobile phones too much ?

We asked some member of the public what they thought.
( Insert footage of vox pops asking teenagers how much they check their phone and do they think this technology in taking over )

These phones are not used for their usual purposes as much as they used be. A study shows that most phone users are typically using their phone for social networking and email. This means that health scares have also risen as the lack of social interaction is harming the way people communicate in social situations.

Its biggest impact has been on the youth as they are facing multiple issues such as internet addiction and cyber bulling.  This is only becoming more of a problem as children are exposed more and more everyday to the use of mobile phones and social media. Now we have let 9 out of 10 in the Uk own a mobile phone we have to work out the consequences.
